Sobremesa joins Lisbon Art Weekend for a programme of artistic encounters, participatory happenings and conversations exploring food as material, method and a way of producing knowledge.

From 5 to 8 November 2026, Sobremesa joins Lisbon Art Weekend for a programme of artistic encounters, participatory happenings, a durational performance, a residents’ showcase and conversations exploring food as material, method and a way of producing knowledge.

Across Casa de Macau, Estúdio Baratinha, HANGAR and Cicero, artists and collaborators bring food cultures, memory, migration and exchange into dialogue through shared experiences. The programme includes a participatory opening and a food happening at Casa de Macau, a durational food-based performance at Estúdio Baratinha, a showcase of Sobremesa residents’ work at HANGAR followed by dinner, and talks at Cicero alongside the digital launch of the Sobremesa 2026 programming calendar.

The programme forms part of Sobremesa: Vagaries of the Palate, a European collaborative project examining how food can open up questions of identity, migration, collective memory and social relations.

Programme

Thursday, 5 November · Casa de Macau · 16:00–18:00

Opening and participatory happening

Visitors are invited to engage with textiles and other artworks as forms of text, bringing Macanese and Polish flavours into an artistic exchange. A Macanese cocktail offered by Casa de Macau introduces the idea of “taste as text”, which develops further in the food happening on 7 November.

Saturday, 7 November · Estúdio Baratinha · 15:00–18:00

Food-based performance and studio presentation

Artists from Estúdio Baratinha and invited artists respond to a shared proposition: to create a work related to food or drink. Food is approached not only as a subject, but as a material and a situation—opening up space between artwork, sharing and encounter. The durational performance unfolds throughout the afternoon, with visitors able to encounter the contributions, artists and studio environment. The studio will also present one work by each invited artist in dialogue with its existing works and working environment.

Confirmed invited artists: Sara e André, Carla Dias and João Migwel.

Saturday, 7 November · Casa de Macau · 15:00–17:00

Food happening

A public gathering brings together European, Asian and African tastes through a family constellation of Polish, Cantonese, Macanese and Kurdish connections, alongside a Cape Verdean contribution being developed with the curator. The food contributions remain in development as the collaborators coordinate the details.

Artists: Marta Stanisława Sala and Cheong Kin Man  |  Curator: Ricardo Barbosa Vicente

In collaboration with Casa de Macau, with special guests.

Sunday, 8 November · HANGAR – Centro de Investigação Artística · 17:00

Sobremesa residents’ showcase

A presentation of work by Sobremesa residents alongside projects emerging from HANGAR’s ongoing residencies, followed by dinner. Further programme and timing details to be confirmed.

Sunday, 8 November · Cicero · Talks and digital launch | By invitation

A programme of talks and conversations will take place at Cicero alongside the digital launch of the Sobremesa 2026 programming calendar. Exact timings and the final list of participants are to be confirmed.
