Greece as a member state and as one of the external borders of the European Union, is a place of both arrival and transit. Thessaloniki, sitting on one of its important migration routes, is a city shaped by histories of displacement, inequality, and grassroots solidarity initiatives.
Here, food exists in a persistent tension between scarcity and abundance: between insufficient access to food and its excessive waste, between resources available for redistribution and those available for preservation. Out of these contradictions, a network of solidarity infrastructures has grown, attempting to bridge the gaps left by political, economic, and social inequalities.
echoes residency is hosted within this context by Fix in Art, a community space and non-profit in Epanomi, near Thessaloniki. Since 2011, Fix in Art has been a place for art, non-formal education, and community life, with a particular focus on young people, refugees, and people with limited means. Alongside its cultural activities, it has spent over a decade building a food solidarity infrastructure — collaborating with organisations like Boroume, an NGO dedicated to reducing food waste and insecurity, and works progressively towards self-sufficiency.
Rather than observing this landscape from a distance, echoes residency treats it as a site for situated learning, functioning as a living and life-long pedagogical environment. echoes residents engage directly with solidarity kitchens and initiatives around Thessaloniki through participation and everyday life — extending Fix in Art's existing practice by letting artistic research collaborate alongside people already doing the work of food justice, migration support, and collective care.
